Claudia MacDonald has built an inspiring career in women’s rugby. She did not begin the sport as a child, yet she rose from university rugby to the England Red Roses within a few years. Now known as Claudia Moloney-MacDonald, she plays for Exeter Chiefs Women and represents England as a winger, with experience at scrum-half.

Her journey includes international success, serious injuries, charity work and a lasting interest in sustainability. Together, these experiences show how determination can open a new path at any age.

    Who Is Claudia MacDonald?

Claudia Frances MacDonald was born on 4 January 1996 in Epsom, Surrey, and is 30 years old in 2026. Her family moved to Dubai in 2008, and her brothers, Alex and Seb, also had links with rugby.

Netball was her first serious sport, while hockey and tennis also formed part of her school life. This background helped her develop quick movement, balance and awareness as an attacking back.

Claudia MacDonald’s Education and Sporting Background

Claudia MacDonald studied at Jumeirah College in Dubai and St John’s School in Leatherhead, achieving excellent results in economics, history and mathematics. She was also senior netball captain and took part in hockey, sport leadership and fundraising.

In 2015, Claudia MacDonald began an economics degree at Durham University. She graduated in 2018 with a 2:1 and captained both the university’s 15-a-side and sevens rugby teams.

She was also involved in Durham’s Josephine Butler College rugby club and the Women in Business and Finance Society. Her studies included development economics, the history of economic thought and corporate finance. This mixture of sport, study and leadership gave her useful skills for life after university.

    Academic Interests Beyond Rugby

Her dissertation examined Fairtrade consumers, including motivation, personality and demographic factors. This interest in responsible choices connects with her later work on sustainability.

    How Claudia MacDonald Found Rugby

Claudia MacDonald did not take up rugby seriously until she was 19. While studying at Durham, she discovered that its physical challenge and team spirit suited her, and soon became captain of the university side.

Her netball footwork supported her passing, tackling, running and movement skills, while her competitive attitude helped her adjust to rugby’s physical demands.

From University Rugby to the Professional Game

During the 2017–18 season, she joined Darlington Mowden Park Sharks, or DMP Sharks. In 2018, she moved to Wasps Ladies, where experienced competition helped her develop and move closer to the England set-up.

Her rise showed that university sport can create a route into elite competition, even for players without a traditional junior academy background.

Before becoming a full-time international player, she gained experience in different settings. She worked as a sports assistant at St John’s School, helped coach children at the Senocke Centre and supported school administration at Eaton Square School. She also spoke at women’s sport events for KPMG China. These roles strengthened her communication, organisation and coaching skills.

    Claudia MacDonald’s Club Career

Her club career has shaped her into a versatile back. She moved from scrum-half duties towards the wing, where her pace, direct running and finishing have made her valuable to club and country.

    DMP Sharks and Wasps

DMP Sharks provided her first senior season in 2017, followed by four seasons with Wasps from 2018 to 2022. During a Wasps pre-season trip to France, she met fellow player Cliodhna Moloney.

    Exeter Chiefs Women

In 2022, she joined Exeter Chiefs Women and continued to play there while representing England. The club also supported her return from injury.

During the 2025–26 season, she scored four tries in one home performance and six across two matches, helping Exeter reach the Premiership Women’s Rugby semi-finals.

    England Career and Major Honours

She made her England debut in 2018 against the United States, only three years after starting rugby. In 2019, she earned a professional England contract and helped the team win the Women’s Six Nations Grand Slam. She also scored during the Super Series against the United States and played a full match against Italy.

    World Cup Experience

Claudia MacDonald was selected for the delayed 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in 2022. After returning from injury, she joined England’s 2025 World Cup squad, which defeated Canada in the final at Twickenham. She then contributed to England’s 2026 Women’s Six Nations Grand Slam campaign.

By 2026, she had reached 40 England test caps.

Her 2025 return was especially impressive. She scored four tries in three Women’s Six Nations matches and was among England’s leading try scorers in the tournament. She also earned Player of the Match recognition after scoring twice against Scotland. These performances helped restore her confidence and confirmed that she could still influence major international games after a long absence.

Claudia MacDonald’s Injury and Brave Return

Claudia MacDonald has faced two serious neck injuries, one in 2022 and another while playing for Exeter in February 2024. After the later incident, she temporarily lost movement in her arms and legs. The experience left her frightened and unsure whether her body would fully recover.

The injury kept her away from England for 16 months. Rehabilitation involved rebuilding strength and trust in her body, as well as managing fear. She returned to Exeter in late 2024 and regained her England place in March 2025, showing the value of patience, medical support and mental strength.

Her recovery also changed the way she viewed competition. Instead of taking fitness for granted, she became more aware of rest, preparation and the need to listen to her body. The experience gave her a deeper understanding of athletes who face long periods away from their teams and made her return meaningful to supporters across the women’s game.

Claudia MacDonald’s Wife and Family Life

Her wife is Cliodhna Moloney, an Irish international rugby player who has also played for Exeter Chiefs Women. They met through Wasps in 2018 and have supported each other’s careers. Their different national teams created a unique moment when they faced each other in the 2026 Women’s Six Nations.

    Marriage to Cliodhna Moloney

The couple married in 2025. In a verified social media post, she celebrated a magical day with family and friends and used the name “Mrs Moloney MacDonald”. England Rugby now uses the hyphenated form Claudia Moloney-MacDonald, while older records use her birth surname.

Because both women understand the pressure of elite sport, they have been able to support one another through selection decisions, travel and injury. Their marriage also attracted attention when they met as opponents, but the match showed respect and affection rather than rivalry away from the field.

Sustainability, Charity and Life Away from Rugby

Her interests reach beyond sport. She cares about environmental, social and governance matters, known as ESG, and runs the sustainability platform “Let’s Talk 1%”.

    Let’s Talk 1%

The platform encourages practical changes such as reducing waste, reusing items and making thoughtful travel choices. In 2019, she also completed a sustainability advisory internship with KPMG UK, linking her economics education with her environmental concerns.

    Charity and Speaking Work

Claudia MacDonald has worked as a Rugby Champion for The Atlas Foundation, which uses rugby and education to support vulnerable young people. She has also been a speaker and volunteer for Make-A-Wish UK at schools, corporate events and local organisations. Earlier roles included sports coaching, school administration, event support and volunteering with children at an orphanage in Peru.

During her time in Peru, she assisted children aged from three to 17, helped teach lessons and supported practical building work. The experience improved her Spanish and gave her a wider view of community work. It remains part of the pattern that runs through her career: using her skills to encourage, organise and support other people.

What Makes Claudia MacDonald Stand Out?

Her greatest strength is adaptability. She changed from netball to rugby at 19, moved between scrum-half and wing, progressed through different clubs and returned after two serious neck injuries.

Her academic background, charity work and environmental projects give her career a wider purpose. On the pitch, she is quick, direct and willing to take responsibility in attack, while her recovery shows patience and care.

Her example is particularly valuable for young players who feel they have started too late. She shows that progress can come through university clubs, local teams and disciplined practice. Her work with schools and charities also gives her a natural connection with the next generation, allowing her to encourage confidence before talent has fully developed.

    Claudia MacDonald’s Lasting Influence

From a late start in rugby to England’s world champions, her career shows that success does not follow one timetable. It includes academic achievement, international honours, club leadership, injury recovery and meaningful work away from the pitch.

As Claudia Moloney-MacDonald, she continues to represent England and Exeter Chiefs Women while supporting sport, charity, business and environmental causes. Her story shows that courage can mean returning after fear and using an athletic career to help others.
